STANDARD 1: Understanding and interpreting spoken and written language on a work topic

1.1 Using listening skills at an advanced level

Benchmark Indicators:

  1. Understand verbal details of social exchanges, e.g. greetings, leave-taking, introductions
  2. Understand job-related questions, requests, suggestions, advice, compliments, complaints, refusals and orders
  3. Understand code-switching instructions, brief descriptions of installation procedures and the sequencing of the assembly
  4. Understand expressions used to attract attention; request and offer assistance; express warnings; ask and grant permission and give advice
  5. Understand key information in work-related dialogues and meetings
  6. Identify specific factual details and inferred meanings in small meetings, seminars and lectures
  7. Understand different accents

Benchmark Indicators:

  1. Get key information related to the automotive industry from notes, forms. figures, work orders, memos, price lists price quotations, specifications, etc.
  2. Understand instructions/ directions, manuals, installation and repair procedures, specifications and regulations, lists of parts, tables, catalogues, completed forms containing check boxes., and numerical entries
  3. Read aloud specific automotive vocabulary lists and formulaic expressions with acceptable pronunciation and intonation
  4. Grasp main ideas and specific details of minutes of meetings, contracts, legal documents, and international transaction documents
  5. Understand news reports, magazine and journal articles, academic texts related to the automotive industry

  2. Take notes and prepare minutes of meetings
  3. Write project proposals

  7. Prepare work orders, guidelines for training, packaging labels, prepare brochures, manuals and instructions for installations

STANDARD 3:
USING AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE VARIETY AND REGISTER ACCORDING TO AUDIENCE, PURPOSE, SETTING, AND CULTURE

  1. Use appropriate language register to interact with colleagues, superiors and customers
  2. Respond appropriately to compliments, refusals, negative value judgments, criticism and complaints from customers and superiors
  3. Use appropriate strategies to handle communication problems

STANDARD 4:
UNDERSTANDING AND USING NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION APPROPRIATE TO AUDIENCE, PURPOSE, SETTING, AND CULTURE

  2. Identify nonverbal cues that cause misunderstanding or indicate communication problems

Benchmark Indicators:

  1. Understand verbal details of social exchanges, e.g. greetings, leave-taking and introductions
  2. Understand job-related simple questions, requests, suggestions, advice, compliments, complaints, refusals and orders
  3. Understand simple instructions, brief descriptions of installation procedures and the sequencing of assembly processes
  4. Understand simple expressions used to attract attention; request and offer assistance; express warnings; ask and grant permission; and give advice

Benchmark Indicators:

  1. Get key information concerning automotive industry from simple notes, forms, figures, work orders, memos, etc.
  2. Understand simple instructions/directions, manuals, installation and repair procedures, specifications and regulations, lists of parts, tables and catalogues, completed forms containing check boxes, and numerical entries
  3. Understand non-textual graphics,
    e.g. maps, signs, flow-charts, diagrams, labels, scale drawings and assembly drawings
  4. Read aloud specific automotive vocabulary lists and formulaic expressions with acceptable pronunciation and intonation

  4. Give and respond to simple introductions/ directions/ cautions/ warnings
  5. Give basic descriptions of work
  6. Use basic words and expressions relating to work with acceptable pronunciation
  7. Adjust language for clarity and accuracy

Benchmark Indicators:

  1. Fill in cost estimate forms and complete inspection forms, checking off items and writing comments
  2. Complete forms by marking check boxes, recording numerical information or entering words, phrases or sentences
  3. Fill in details on a work order after the job is completed to indicate the repairs carried out and the charges for parts and labor
  4. Write comments on work order forms to indicate further work which should be done
  5. Make notes on the back of inspection forms to note specific details about repaired parts
