Language Focus 2: Useful vocabulary and phrases

Audio ClipWhen requesting or putting together design requirements similar language elements will be used in the questions and instructions. Here is a sample dialog:

Designer: Good afternoon, sir, how can I help you?
Potential Customer: I wanted to ask you about designing a new ___________ for me.
Designer: I see. Do you have anything particular in mind?
Potential Customer: Well, I’ve seen the work you’ve done for some of your clients.
Designer: Yes, I’m happy to say that most of my customers go away satisfied.
Potential Customer: Here’s an image of what I’d like you to work from.
Designer: OK. And are there any features you’d like to be included?
Potential Customer: I’d be happy to hear your suggestions.
Designer: Well, for this style I think ________________ would be very effective.
Potential Customer: Yes. That does sound nice. Anything else?
Designer: How about ____________________________?
Potential Customer: Oh yes! That sounds wonderful. Will it be expensive?
Designer: I’ll have to put together a detailed quotation for you.
Potential Customer: How long will it take? *
Designer: It will be around ________________________.
Potential Customer: Thank you very much. I’ll give you a call then.

This dialog would work for a customer ordering bespoke clothing or a makeover on his garden. The gaps would be filled by the relevant vocabulary. * Refers to ‘it’, which might be the quote or the actual job itself (making the clothing or transforming the garden.)
