Module 9: Engineering and Design in ASEAN

Activities

Activity 5

Match the description of the mechanical problem (1-10) with the mechanic’s recommendation or analysis (A-J).

Recommendation or analysis

A  Sounds like loss of compression; you’ve probably got a leaky valve.

B  Oh, you mean the sump.

C  I bet you did! You should never touch the distributor when the engine’s running.

D  Misfires are usually connected with cylinder problems.

E  To make sure that the maximum amount of air gets to the engine.

F  The connecting rod connects the piston to the crankshaft.

G That sounds like piston slap. You should get your engine checked.

H Your starter motor is jammed. You probably need a new solenoid.

I  Starting problems are often connected to the spark plugs. I’d get them checked.

J  The water pump pumps water around the engine to cool it.

Optional activity
Research your engineering specialty and put together a presentation of its features and important vocabulary.
