9.1.4 Traditional ASEAN houses
The types of construction we have looked at so far feature mainly the modern types, which might also be called ‘Western style’.
In the tropical climates of the 10 ASEAN countries, natural resources such as trees and plants tend to grow much faster than they do in colder western climates. Perhaps it is for this reason that many of the styles of houses in the ASEAN countries feature wood from trees and other fast-growing plants. Though there are similarities, each has some distinctive feature:

One might note the high roofs and the ‘stilts’, which are features included to cope with the amounts of tropical rainfall that are often experienced in most ASEAN countries.
