Language Focus 6: Talking about your work: Recruitment terms

These are useful words to learn about your job.

Word Meaning
work/ job (n.) employment , position or specific type of  work (usually manual)
duty (n.) responsibility
task (n.) specific piece of work
hire (v.) employ
wage (n.) payment made for service (normally by the hour)
salary (n.) money paid  monthly to workers/employees
bonus (n.) extra money paid to workers for good work
remuneration (n.) cash or non-cash paid to worker depending on performance
per diem allowance (n.) fixed amount of money paid per day to cover travelling expenses
resign/ quit (v.) stop working or give up one’s position voluntarily
retire (v.) leave after reaching a certain age

employer (n.) a person or organization that employs people
employee (n.)  a person who hire in any type of work
personnel (n.) people employed in an organization or engaged in an organized undertaking
worker (n.) an employee that does manual work
staff (n.) a group of employees working in the same area
colleague (n.) an employee working together in the same area
co-worker/ peer (n.) a person at the same level
boss (n.) a person who is in charge of a worker or organization
supervisor (n.) a person who watches and directs workers in an organization
subordinate (n.) a person who works below you
assistant (n.) a person who works specifically for you
