Employment Criteria for Foreign Trained Nurses in Malaysia
Criteria for Employment of Foreign Trained Nurses at Health Facilities and the Institution of Public and Private Higher Education in Malaysia.
The 98th Nursing Board Malaysia Meeting held on the 18th March 2010 has agreed to the amendment to the procedure for employment of foreign trained nurses at health facilities and institutions of higher learning, public and private and agreed upon by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
- Other than the current criteria, several amendments have been enforced with effect from the 1st July 2010 for employment of foreign trained nurses as follows:
1.1 Age 27 years and above
1.2 Possess not less than 3 years of clinical experience after completion of studies and possess specialization
in nursing. Need to show evidence or certification from authorized body from country of origin
1.3 Only foreign trained nurses registered with the Nursing board or council from country of origin and
supported with a Verification of Transcript and Verification of Training will be considered.
1.4 Not permitted to practice obstetrics in Malaysia
1.5 Only foreign trained nurses that have been approved by the Selection Committee for Recruitment of
Foreign Trained Nurses are allowed to practice in Malaysia
1.6 The highest Nursing Positions are headed by Malaysian citizens only
1.7 Each application for employment is through the employer
1.8 The employer needs to obtain the Temporary Practicing Certificate from Nursing Board Malaysia prior
to application for approval of Work Permit and Multiple Entry Visa from the Immigration Department
1.9 Only those with a Temporary Practicing Certificate (TPC), Approval of Work Permit and Multiple
Entry Visa from the Immigration Department, Ministry of Internal Affairs as well as Teaching Permit
from the Ministry of Higher Education are allowed to work. The duration of valid Work Permit and
that of the Temporary Practicing Certificate is the same.
1.10 Fluent in the English Language (spoken and written)
1.11 Possess a Temporary Practicing Certificate issued by Nursing Board Malaysia, renewable yearly
1.12 Abide by the laws, rules and regulations of Malaysia and the Nurses Act 1950.
- Other than the above criteria and qualifications as stated from (1.1 to 1.12) and possessing Teaching Methodology or has undergone a module in Teaching Methodology, the employment of a foreign trained nurse as a Nursing Tutor at the Public / Private Nursing College / Institution of Higher Learning will require additional qualifications as follows:
2.1. Certificate in Nursing Program
2.1.1 Possess Diploma in Nursing
2.1.2 Currently teaching in a Nursing Institution at time of application
2.2. Diploma in Nursing Program:
2.2.1 Possess a Degree in Nursing or equivalence
2.2.2 Currently teaching in a Nursing Institution at time of application
2.3. Bachelor in Nursing Program (Pre- Registration and Post Registration)
2.3.1 Possess a degree in Nursing or equivalence
2.3.2 Possess a Masters in Nursing or equivalence
2.3.3 Currently teaching in a Nursing Institution at time of application
2.4. Qualification for Clinical Instructor
2.4.1. Possess Diploma in Nursing with Specialization
2.4.2. Currently practicing in healthcare or community health facilities at time of application.
