  1. To listen for information we should be aware of the whole overall listening process: (1) Pre-listening (2) While listening (3) After listening.
  2. To listen for the main idea or the gist of the information in the listening texts, we should pay attention to key words.
  3. To listen for details, we should keep wh- questions in mind.

After studying this section, students will be able to

  1. apply the listening strategies before listening, while listening and after listening.
  2. identify the main idea or the gist and the key words of the assigned listening texts.
  3. identify the answers to wh-questions asked about the assigned listening texts.

5.1.2 One voice: Listen to ASEAN songs

Concepts Objectives
  1. In practice listening, we should pay attention to rhythm and intonation.
  2. Practice makes perfect: Students should practice how to pronounce.

After studying this section, students will be able to

  1. pronounce assigned words and phrases in standard English (RP) effectively.
  2. tell what strategies to use to make one’s pronunciation better.

 5.2.1 Diversity and Unity: Diversity in accents among the ASEAN community

  1. Different people from different countries have their own unique English accents.
  2. To listen to an interview, one must be able to comprehend different accents together with using world knowledge, topic knowledge and language knowledge (vocabulary, set phrases).
  3. Students should monitor themselves at all times to make progress in learning English and should get feedback from others.

After studying this section, students will be able to

  1. identify different English accents.
  2. identify the content of a given interview in detail.
 5.2.2  Listen to a panel discussion

Concepts Objectives
  1. Different people from different countries have their own unique English accents.
  2. To listen to a panel discussion, one must be able to comprehend different accents together with using world knowledge, topic knowledge and language knowledge (vocabulary, set phrases). 
  3. Each panelist has their own views and presents facts to support their views.
  4. Students should monitor themselves at all times to make progress in learning English and should get feedback from others.

After studying this section, students will be able to

  1. identify different English accents.
  2. identify the content of a given panel discussion in detail.
  3. distinguish facts from opinions of panelists in a given panel.
  4. identify one’s own learning strategies.
