Language Focus 3: Gerunds

A gerund functions as a noun and can be the subject or object of a sentence and it always

  1. follows a preposition or
  2. follows the following verbs:

admit

delay

excuse

mention 

recollect

suggest

appreciate

deny

fancy  

mind

report 

stop

avoid 

detest 

finish  

miss 

regret

suggest 

compare

dislike 

forgive 

practise

resent

confess 

enjoy 

imagine 

postpone

resist

consider

escape

involve

recognize

risk 

 

Examples:

My sister always enjoys talking on her phone and playing with her pets.
When we finish playing we will go home.

We fancy going out after dinner.
I will go shopping after I finish studying.
My nephews is good at singing.
Please stop smoking in this area.

Note: The gerund has the same form as in ‘progressive’ or ‘continuous’ verb tense form as in the following sentences.

He is playing tennis. (playing is a progressive or continous verb form)
Playing music is my favorite pastime. (Playing in this sentence is a gerund)
